The German section of the Department offers a wide range of academic internship opportunities. These internships are not summer jobs, but chances to improve your German language skills in a work environment. We have, in the recent past, placed students in different cities throughout Germany and Austria.

Students who have finished the equivalent of German 202 or higher may apply for the Summer Internship Program at the Goethe Institute in Schwäbisch Hall, a beautiful medieval town outside of Stuttgart, Germany. These internships are not paid, but include a rigorous classroom language element. Your Goethe Institute classes may be able to count toward your German Major or Minor. Applications for these internships are due by January 31 to Prof. McFarland.

Students who have completed the equivalent of German 321 or higher may apply for Spring/ Summer internships through the Steuben-Schurz Gesellschaft. These internships will provide excellent opportunities to improve your language. The internships are in various business and governmental organizations located in cities throughout Germany. Some of these internships may count toward a German Major or Minor. Applications for these internships are due to Prof. McFarland by November 15.

A few special Academic internships are available in August each year through the Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany. These will involve intense coursework and language instruction. It is very easy to have this internship count toward your German Major or Minor. Applications need to be completed with Prof. McFarland by January 31.

Students interested in teaching English as a second language can apply for internships with the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria. You will need to take part in TESL training courses held in the Linguistics Department. Applications for these internships are due to Prof. McFarland by November 15.

You may also choose to organize your own internship with the help of the Kennedy Center internship office. Be sure to start organizing at least a year ahead of time.
