As the HBLL will probably be your main resource in research, you should familiarize yourself with the special features offered. The Humanities Reference Librarian, Robert Means (5224 HBLL, 801/378-6117), who specializes in research assistance, will be especially helpful to you. The following is a list of library resources available to you:
For extensive research projects you may want to consult Connie Lamb (3228 HBLL, 801/378-5627) about using Computer Assisted Research Services. Students must come to the library’s CARS lab and perform the searches themselves. In the lab, students receive assistance with their searches and have access to instructional guides and a tutorial disc.
Students can make appointments for searches during the daytime hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., by coming to 3230 HBLL or calling 801/378-6010. The first ten hours are subsidized for graduate students; after that, a modest fee per search is charged (less than $5 per search on the average).
Bibliographic references can be printed directly to paper and/or to disc. Coverage is significantly greater than CD-ROM databases in terms of availability of databases and periods of time covered.
Contains primary sources for historical research, including diaries, journals, literary manuscripts, research files, photographs, etc. Level 5.
The library provides this service, borrowing copies of materials not found in the HBLL from other libraries. Level 3.
