German Courses

GERM 101 : First-Year German.

Listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture. For those who have had no German.

GERM 102 : First-Year German.

Prerequisite: C grade or better in Germ 101 or equivalent. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture.

GERM 103 : Intensive First-Year German.

F; Honors also. Covers both Germ 101 and 102. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture.

GERM 199R : Academic Internship.

Prerequisite: Department chair's and cooperative education coordinator's consent. On-the-job experience evaluated by supervisor and posted on student's transcript. Report required. Not applicable to German major or minor.

GERM 200R : Second-Year Proficiency Tutorial.

F, W Prerequisite: Germ 102 or equivalent. Individualized skill building in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.

GERM 201 : Second-Year German.

Prerequisite: C grade or better in Germ 102 or equivalent. Reading, writing, grammar, culture, listening, and speaking.

GERM 202 : Second-Year German.

Prerequisite: C grade or better in Germ 201 or equivalent. Culminating course for Languages of Learning requirement emphasizing culture and literature. Continued writing, grammar, listening, and speaking. Prerequisite to all 300- and 400-level courses.

GERM 211R : Intermediate Conversation.

F Prerequisite: Germ 102 or equivalent experience. Intensive vocabulary building and conversation practice. Can be fulfilled through language residency program.

GERM 215

GERM 217 : (Germ-Scand) German and Scandinavian Cinema.

W A first-year writing course. Background for understanding and appreciating the best of motion picture art in Germany and Scandinavia. Language of instruction is English; no knowledge of German or Scandinavian languages is required.

GERM 300R : Third-Year Proficiency Tutorial.

F, W Prerequisite: Germ 202 or equivalent. Individualized skill building in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.

GERM 301 : Intermediate German.

Prerequisite: Germ 202 and/or a score of "Intermediate" or lower on the Standard German Language Test. Germ 101, 102, 201, 202. Integration of different aspects of language learning including speaking, listening, culture, writing, reading, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Geared toward "high-intermediate" level language learner. Counts as an elective towards the German major or minor.

GERM 302 : Advanced German Language 1.

Prerequisite: Germ 301 and/or an "advanced" score on the Standard German Language Test (administered in Germ 202 or 330). Germ 301, 330 if major language exam score is "intermediate" or lower; Study Abroad in Berlin or Vienna. Integration of different aspects of language learning including speaking, listening, culture, writing, reading, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Required for German major or minor. Geared toward the "advanced" level language learner.

GERM 303 : Advanced German Language 2.

F, W Prerequisite: Germ 302. Germ 330; Study Abroad in Berlin or Vienna. Continuation of Germ 302. Integration of different aspects of language learning including speaking, listening, culture, writing, reading, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Required for German major or minor. Geared toward the "advanced" level language learner.

GERM 311R : Advanced Conversation.

W Prerequisite: Germ 211R or equivalent experience. Intensive vocabulary building and conversation practice. Can be fulfilled through language residency program.

GERM 330 : Cultural History of German-Speaking Peoples.

Honors also. Prerequisite: Germ 202 or equivalent experience. Culture, with listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar as secondary emphases. Includes International Cinema. Entry course for returned missionaries or others with equivalent German language experience. Required course for obtaining language credit by examination (Germ 101, 102, 201, 311R). Prerequisite to all 400-level courses. Culminating course for Languages of Learning requirement.

GERM 340 : Writing About Literature.

Honors also. Methods of literary interpretation. Reading, writing, and research skills integral to the literary analysis expected in German major or minor courses. Fills GE Advanced Written and Oral Communication requirement.

GERM 343 : Introduction to Literary Analysis.

Honors also. Germ 320, 321, 330, 340. Close reading of texts; examining various critical theories and their application to German prose, drama, poetry, and film. Preparation for 440R - 445R sequence. Includes International Cinema.

GERM 344 : Introduction to Phonetics.

Prerequisite: Germ 330. Germ 301, 302, 303. Perfecting listening and speaking skills through applying phonetics and acoustic analysis; practicing speaking and listening.

GERM 370 : German Teaching in Higher Education.

W Prerequisite: Germ 310, 320, 330. Theories, methods, and techniques of second-language learning and teaching applied to the university context; practicum in department German courses.

GERM 399R : Academic Internship: German Work.

On-the-job ten-week summer language experience in German-speaking countries. Report required. Not applicable to German major or minor.

GERM 400R : Fourth-Year Proficiency Tutorial.

F, W Prerequisite: Senior status. Individualized skill building in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Completed portfolios reviewed, and final proficiency examination administered. Required for one credit in one of final two semesters for graduating seniors.

GERM 440R : German Literary Periods and Movements.

Germ 320, 321, 330, 340, 343. In-depth study of a period or movement such as medieval, Renaissance, baroque, eighteenth century, romanticism, classicism, realism, fin-de-siecle Vienna, naturalism, expressionism, post-war, or contemporary.

GERM 441R : Studies in German Literary Genres.

Germ 320, 321, 330, 340, 343. In-depth study of a genre such as drama, novel, novella, lyric, or film.

GERM 442R : Major German Authors.

Germ 320, 321, 330, 340, 343. In-depth study of one author such as Lessing, Goethe, B.V. Arnim, Kleist, Storm, Rilke, Brecht, Mann, Kafka, or Bachmann.

GERM 443R : Studies in Literary Theory.

Germ 320, 321, 330, 340, 343. In-depth study of primary texts by contemporary literary theorists. May include topics such as Frankfurter school, feminist criticism, reader response, or post-structuralism.

GERM 444R : Interdisciplinary Studies.

Germ 320, 321, 330, 340, 343. Studies linking German literature, film, and the arts within German culture or across national boundaries.

GERM 445R

GERM 450 : History of the German Language.

Prerequisite: Germ 310, 320, 321. Linguistic survey of the German language from Indo-European to modern times, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon.

GERM 460 : Structure of Modern German.

Prerequisite: Germ 310, 320, 321. Structural and socio-linguistic study of contemporary German.

GERM 490R : Special Studies in German.

Prerequisite: Instructor's consent. Variable credit for individual or group study as approved for special circumstances. Not applicable to German major or minor.

GERM 497R : Senior Seminar in German Language.

Prerequisite: Senior status. Culminating senior-level course in which acquired knowledge and critical skills are brought to bear on a selected language topic. In-depth capstone paper on one aspect of topic.

GERM 498R : Senior Seminar in German Literature.

W Prerequisite: Senior status. Culminating senior-level course in which acquired knowledge and critical skills are brought to bear on a selected literature topic. In-depth capstone paper on one aspect of topic.
