German Studies Requirements
The purpose of a major or minor in German Studies is to give you a solid foundation in both the language and the rich culture of German-speaking countries. In addition, your courses will help you learn to think critically, to analyze clearly, to research effectively, and to speak and write persuasively about your ideas.
To achieve these goals, we have built a great deal of flexibility into the German curriculum. We encourage students to fill many of their credits through our Study Abroad or Internship programs. We also offer intensive German experience to those who live in the German House. Through the Pro-Seminars and other variable credit seminars, you can take part in faculty mentored research. Our course of study can also be combined with a double major.
German majors may choose between a Literature Emphasis, a Linguistics Emphasis, and a German Teaching Major. Please click on the links to see the requirements for each of these areas. German minors may choose between a regular German minor and a German Teaching Minor.
All areas of a German major or minor or Teaching major or minor are driven by a Portfolio, which you will assemble as you proceed through your course of study.
The German section also offers a Masters’ Degree program. Please click on the link to find the requirements and pertinent information.
NOTE: Students enrolled as a German Major or Minor prior to Fall semester 2006 may choose whether to finish their program using the old requirements or the new requirements. Questions should be directed to Dr. Michelle S. James at Michelle_James@byu.edu.
